Montreal, more affordable than other Canadian cities ?

25 Jul 2023

According to a new indicator from Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC), Montreal and Quebec City stand out from the country's other major cities in offering affordable private housing for low-income households.

In the Montreal region, some 23% of units in rental buildings of three or more units are offered at a rent of less than $750 per month, or less than 30% of the pre-tax income of the poorest households.

In Quebec City, this proportion rises to a quarter of private housing units. In contrast, Toronto, Ottawa and Vancouver have percentages close to zero, while in Gatineau it's 8%.

Affordable housing for low-income households is therefore extremely limited in major cities, with the exception of Montreal and Quebec City, where the housing stock is generally older and of poorer quality.
